I've heard a lot over the past decade on resolutions versus goals. Resolutions seem temporary and unforgiving while goals feel like a lifelong (or yearly) endeavor. I identify more with making goals and therefore is what I typically do each year. This year I decided to follow a guide on goal setting that asked me to dig deeper. I sometimes have trouble with digging deep. Digging deep sometimes means that I'll pull up the ugly stuff about myself. That junk I don't like about myself or want to keep quiet. Well, in all the sweat that comes with digging I was able to find a couple of things I'd like to really work on in 2013 (and forever, really). I picked a WORD. Two really.
Picking a word for the coming year has been a trend I've noticed over the past few years. I have to be honest, I didn't want to go along with it. By nature I tend to steer clear of anything that is considered trendy. Something about lemmings come to mind... Anyway, I decided that I would follow the goal setting guide to a T and picked a word. Um, two.
Why EMBRACE & GROW?
As hippe and open-minded as I try to be...I hate change when it's not initiated by me. I flip out (only slightly) when there is a plan that I'm set on and it changes. I'm not talking about dinner plans, I'm talking about the big life stuff. I need to learn to embrace God's plan because as much as I hate to admit it, I'm not in control. Admitting I'm not in control just felt like a group therapy moment.
I want sooooo badly to expand my knowledge in so many areas. I want to learn more about cultures, design, photography, music, illustration, my own religion, other religions, cooking, meditation, fitness, and the list really does go on. Making time is the hard part for me. I want this to be a year of immense growth in all areas of life. I'm thinking if I can grow in spirit and knowledge then maybe I will better learn how to embrace the inevitable changes coming my way. Food for thought on my part.
Writing is a great pleasure for me but much of it happens on my computer. I bought a new book for just 2013. I am going to put pen to paper journaling, sketching, and pasting whatever feels right. I wrote my two words in the front for reference and will add my business + personal visions also.
Did you pick a word or two? If you feel like sharing please do so in the comments. I always love to hear what others come up with.
. peace .

I love the idea of picking a word to help inspire and guide your year. I've decided on the word "leap". Last year it was "grow". I had some amazing experiences and definitely did a lot of growing! This year I want to continue that growth, but I want to take advantage of and seek out more opportunities - that's where my word comes in - I'm often too cautious and want to try to leap more often!
ReplyDeleteMonica, I love the word LEAP. That is really a great one. I feel like I could gather a small collection of words to sum up all my goals/vision. Thanks for sharing. I'll be rooting for you.
